When I was asked by Earl Chessher to write two novellas in the western genre, I was delighted. I saw it as a challenge and an honour. Earl and his friend Ted were planning a campaign to get western stories told all over the world.
They set up Writers of The West and writers were contracted to send in two novellas.
I loved the research and like many I was raised on the cowboy and Indian television series and films. Along with siblings and friends, we also played cowboy and Indian games. But the research really opened my eyes to the true horror that Native Americans went through being disposed of their land. I bought books on the 1800's and was amazed by the American West. I also got and read the wonderful book, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown.
My first novella was The Runaway. I liked this book and the telling of Jed's story. Of all my writings, this one really makes me feel good about my writing. I don't know why but it does. I sat in my local public library one morning and the opening line came to me. I was off, I needed to know why Jed feared for his life and how he got on once he left his home town.
Then came Destiny. Again, the characters in this are like old friends to me. I saw Charlie riding his horse, Chestnut, both sauntering across the plains, sun in the sky and they happy with each others company. But Charlie knew he couldn't continue to roam, age was catching up. Then when he sees an abandoned house, well, why not move it? Only thing is, someone else had seen it first, Ahyoka, who saw it as her space away from her father's eyes. And so the two collide, their destiny is set.
I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.
