I Have Moved

Hello, Friends and Readers,

I am sorry I have not posted this sooner but I have been busy creating a new website that I hope you will visit and check it out.
I love this blog site but I needed to do more to engage with you all, to help push my books and give it a new face.
I also have a new feature over on the other website called, Letters From Lacey, where Lacey Taylor reveals a little more about life with the Taylor family. This is snippets of her life not revealed in her two books, My Husband's Sin and Don't Call Me Mum. In fact there will be another and final book in her life that I will be writing in the spring of 2019.

So please don't abandon me, hop on over to the new website,

Thanks again for all your support in the past and I know in the future you won't let me down, and when you do visit the new website, please leave a comment with what you think or any suggestions you may have to help me.

Happy Reading!!

See you over there,
Mary

Read Gary's thoughts on Stephen King and much more

Gary Holdaway is a young writer from the UK with big ideas, and an even bigger passion for words. Being a multi-genre author of both novels and short fiction, Gary set up GDH Media to both enhance his own creativity, and help all who wish to create a career out of  words. I asked him a few questions and offered him a writing prompt with which to entertain us with. Read to find out what he shared with me.

Why or what got you into writing?
The easiest ones always seem the longest stories, don’t they? All I can say is I can’t remember a time where writing wasn’t a big part of my life. One of my earliest memories comes from when I was somewhere between five and seven years old. I was a huge Jurassic park fan, and by that I mean I had T-shirts, hoodies, books, videos, and a PlayStation game. I lived and breathed dinosaurs. I remember lying flat on my tummy on the living room floor—a position that is still weirdly comfortable for me, if a little achy around the ribs—sketching out the cover for my first completed short story: Jurassic Park 3: Dino Crisis. I wish I still had it, but like most things, it didn’t seem important at the time.
From there I developed a love of animation and comic books, and started writing short stories surrounding my favourite characters. As a teen I joined a bunch of high quality role playing sites that were pretty strict with their writing standards, and even went on to run a few of my own alongside a writers community I built called Writer’s Block. Alongside my early adulthood came depression, anxiety, and a wave of debilitating issues that made me apprehensive of leaving the house. Due to that limiting my ability to get out to work, I started to write for content sites and run some freelancing on the side to earn enough to pay my bills.
You can read more about my writing journey over on my blog: *The Story So Far*

Have you a routine to your writing day?
I’m just back after a couple years break from writing seriously. My depression took a steep downward step, and my wife and I were going through separation. During that period my writing schedule consisted of writing everything as notes on my phone when I woke up in the morning, and then various bits throughout the day. Ten minutes here and there. It was mainly free writing. Typing out opinions on certain matters, inspirational passages, small waves of insight and wisdom, and the occasional intro to short stories and novels. Words are a part of me, no matter how I try, I can’t escape them in some form or another. This was enough to keep me sane, and as a result have hundreds of pages worth of notes to play with whenever I’m at a loss for what to write!
That said, I am putting a routine together that I’m slowly adapting to. Right now, due to the nature of my family business, I’m writing between one and two thousand words every day, usually after working the day job. That’s not okay for me though. I feel like I’m having to keep myself zipped up all day just to splurge all the words and ideas out at once when I finally get a chance. Instead, I’m opting to rise extra early each morning, to get my two thousand words in every day. Currently I’m at the stage of trying to get to bed earlier each night, and get up earlier each morning. I’m cutting back around quarter of an hour each week. Once I’m comfortable at around 5:00am each morning, all my writing will be moved to that period of time. I’ll use my evenings to make some posts on my blog, sketch, and relax with the family.

Is there a writer you admire more than others?
Some of you will call this a cliché, others will agree. My idol, my favourite author, my writing inspiration, is none other than the great Stephen King. I mean, the man is a writing machine, and he wastes no time decorating story with fluff. He’s the same in life as he is as a narrator. No crap, unpretentious, simple. He gets up in the morning, takes his coffee, and churns out two thousand words. He will stay at his desk until those words are written, and that’s that.
Not every one of his novels are as great as some others, but his work ethic, technique, and style are great. A lot of my own writing style has been influenced by his work. Which Id say is mainly reflected in my lean toward character driven stories, over plot driven. Well that, and my unapologetic honesty in my work. Narrators are neutral, but characters aren’t, and its that simple

Have you a tip for other writers that you think is important knowing?
I actually have a few, which is why I’ve launched the *GDHMedia* blog recently, not only as a creative outlet to publicise fun little flash fictions, but as a place to share everything I can about the writing process. I believe there are a lot of could-be-great writers out there that just need the right advice. If the truth is known, nobody needs to know what an adjective, noun, and verb are. Most readers don’t, do they? The major thing holding writers back from mastering their craft, is the surrounding body of elitists that like to make others feel stupid. Cut the crap, and make it simple. The things we need to master to write great stories are character, pace, dialogue, and style—and believe me, they’re beasts in their own right.
What I’m saying here is, don’t doubt yourself or feel inferior to those with literature degrees because some stiff post-grad working a desk likes to make out like telling a good story is the most complex process in the world, because he’s never quite mastered it himself. We need to loosen up, drop the pretence, and tell the story. It’s really not all that complex once you understand all the parts. It’s like making a proper good English cuppa, ‘Never put the milk in first, let the tea brew a little first, and go easy on the sugar’.

What is your current WIP about?
I’m actually working on a creative non-fiction piece. A personal essay circulating around the first day I admitted to myself I needed help with my depression, and headed to the doctor with my wife and mother. It’s filled with cynicism, dark insights, and some of the unapologetic truth I mentioned earlier. So far it’s turning out really good, but it’s hard to write. Anyway, that’s no fun, so I’ll let you into something I’ve been developing in my mind for a while.
It’s a dark, gritty, Demi-god story, that circulates around the life of a young adult male, who knows with every fibre in his body that he’s meant for something more. He thinks and feels differently to everybody else, has his own ideas for ‘fixing’ things that doesn’t seem to fit into any political spectrum, and feels trapped in his own skin. Trapped on this earth, where nobody quite gets the point. The Gods that have chosen him are the old Gods of the Norse pantheon, and they aren’t particularly pleasant. When they come, their power and presence is suffocating. They’re frightening, strong, and not all that helpful in pointing him in the right direction. They seem to pop up in his dreams, haunt him at random times, and torture him in many ways. It’s like if anything bad can happen, it will happen to him.
Not the typical Demi-god adventure you’d expect, right? Well now all I have to do is write it!

Writing Prompt
He waited for her answer, but she didn’t look happy.

“Before you do this, tell me you don’t still love me.”

The length of silence that stretched between them wasn’t quite what he expected, and now he was aware of all the eyes on him. How many were there anyway? It looked at least a hundred—damn good turnout. Maybe this was a bad idea. Turning up like this, today of all days. Talk about cutting it fine. And the way he just spat it out. Fuck.
Whispers echoed through the church, judgemental, amused, and everything in between. Typical David, acting before thinking, always on the wrong page. The gossipers started to gossip. The outragers’ became outraged. Aunt Jill shook her head in disapproval. Robert’s eyes were fixed on his with a look of sheer anger. Well that, plus a little humour, with just a dash of... sympathy? David couldn’t complain, that amused sympathy was likely the only reason he hadn’t already taken a punch in the eye.
David could shake off the rest, but the look in her eyes. His Sarah. The Sarah he spent half of his life with, now disconnected from him. Disgusted.

“No David, how many times? This is my wedding for God’s sake.”

My Plan of Attack

What do you do when faced with a dilemma?
You think about the issue, write down the pros and cons, gather your thoughts and then hey (hopefully) presto, you have sorted it all out.

Sooooooo, I kinda did that.

I need to have my third novel written by the end of October this year. My decision, totally my own  madcap idea.

How do I make this work? From now until the end of the October, I've got limited time. I want my weekends off, so Monday to Friday, I shall write.
I work out the word count I think will be needed, based on my last novels.
So this gives me my daily word count with weekends off.

Can I do it? Hell yes I can!

So my third novel, Cregane Court (Working Title) shall be tackled with determination and discipline and hopefully I will be posting here in November about how successful I've been.
If not, I will be eating chocolate and happy that I at least gave it ago.

“A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes your dreams come true.” Greg Reid

Guilt Be Gone

September already and so far this year the many writing plans I had in mind last January have taken a backseat. But that's okay, although for months, I battered myself with guilt. It really was only over this weekend, I realised I don't need to be stuck to a timetable or need permission to not turn up to the page. Writing like everything else in my life will have its moments.
It's not like I've sat back and ignored the two novels I began months ago, or the hunt I wanted to go on for an agent, the marketing ides I need to come up with to sell my books, I didn't. It was, that other equally important matters as my writing life, needed my attention.
How many nights did I twist and turn thinking how I will sit at the desk in the morning and write thousands of words, knowing deep down, it wasn't going to happen. Life happens in cycles like the seasons of each year, there is a time for everything.
Family and health took priority so far this year and rightly so. Now that I am on a more even keel with both of those issues, my time can once more be diverted to my writing. It feels right now to sit and type, or think, or plan, or whatever is required for what I'm dealing with, novel, short story, promotion etc.
If you've missed some time at your desk, relax, it will right itself. A writer is never off duty, if you are not writing you will be thinking about it, breathing it, so let the guilt go.
Plus the year isn't over yet, I might complete all I want to do yet and so might you.

Writing longhand and finding motivation

I took a step back from all things writing and crafting since last April as I had so much going on with family.  l literally had three weddings and a funeral.
Anyhow, I now need to get my ass back in the chair and start tackling my third novel that I had started. As this is a new stand alone book I have gone back to writing it longhand.

I did this with my first novel, My Husband's Sin. I found it gave me time to connect with the characters, especially the main one, Lacey Taylor. Then when it came to book two, Don't Call Me Mum, also about Lacey, it was easier to write it on the laptop as I was familiar with the family.
Now writing this new novel, again I feel more at ease writing it longhand rather than typing it. Plus I feel the story flows better for me, I can feel the book more as I discover all it has to offer.

She Never Turned Up
I kept my toes dipped in the writing scene by doing some 500 word flash fiction pieces and while out for lunch last week, I took the below photo. I had bought some flowers and I placed them on the grey granite table. It immediately made me think of someone waiting for a date and it all fell through. I thought it would make a good prompt for a story.

TEA FOR TWO

Here too is a photo of two cups and saucers I crocheted today, to get me motivated again. This too I have captioned and could be used for a writing prompt.

Happy writing x

A Licence to Thrill & Write

What's the next best thing to looking at pictures of your favourite author or reading their books? Well, meeting them I reckon.
I met so many writers I admire at this year's Listowel Writers Week, I shall share more in future blog posts.
I spent an evening in the company of Anthony Horowitz, screenwriter and crime writer supreme, creator of Alex Rider, Sherlock Holmes novels, Magpie Murders, it goes on and on, and yes, I was on cloud nine. Anthony is friendly, informing, engaging, oh the list is endless and yes I do think he is handsome and sexy. He has written the latest James Bond book, Forever and A Day, which he spoke about and of course all his other great reads.
Interviewed by Rick O'Shea, whom I also got to talk with, another amazing gentleman and yes equally engaging as Anthony, the two men chatted and entertained their many fans. Rick also presented me with my ROSBC badge!! I'm so proud of it, (photos in another post). Rick runs the largest online book club in Ireland and works on the national radio station with his own show. Find the book club on FaceBook, link below.
Anthony and Rick 2018

I, of course got the two gentlemen to sign my books.
To add to my enjoyment of meeting Anthony, imagine my delight when my copy of Writing Magazine popped through my letterbox three days after the festival, and there smiling at me on the cover was Mr. Anthony Horowitz himself.

A writer's life has its moments and this was one of those times that topped all others.

A Rare Sighting is Being Enjoyed Right Now

Weather

Where would we Irish be without it? The best ice-breaker in all social occasions. This year in Ireland, Spring didn't turn up! As far as I'm concerned, it was just one long winter since Nov 2017. Admittedly we got one glorious day in April, and many thought that may have been our summer, but thankfully that rare sighting of the sun has made another appearance this May weekend.
This got me thinking (dangerous thing having me thinking) how does the weather play a part in your writing? Does it make an appearance at all? How effective is it in writing?
In my first novel, My Husband's Sin, I used the weather to tell the passing of seasons/time. Describing the days using clothing, school holidays etc.
'The biting wind whipped her scarf off as she grabbed it to cover her mouth and nose from the Arctic cold while she raced for home...'
'Rain pelted down now for five days, fields filling with water, animals stranded on island like patches dotted throughout the countryside...'
I've noticed too that my characters moods are reflected in the weather of the time, sunny bright days = upbeat mood, joyful, contented.
How do you use the weather in your writing? Have you paragraphs describing the elements or just a passing mention? How much is too much? Or do you believe its essential when creating mood, atmosphere or scene setting?
Weather , whatever we think of it or how we feel, one thing's for certain, it has a big part to play in life.

Happy writing, x

First thoughts in on, Don't Call Me Mum.

When one of your favourite authors reads your book, you hold your breath waiting to hear if they enjoyed it or not. I recently asked international best-selling author, Denyse Woods, would she be happy to read, Don't call Me Mum and she agreed much to my delight. This is what she had to share about my second novel, I am thrilled to say the very least.

'Sisters and brothers, divas and daughters, parents and newborns, high fashion and friendship – Don’t Call Me Mum delivers all this as it explores, and celebrates, the contortions of family dynamics. Throw in a religious vocation and illness with an aftershock, and you won’t be able to stop reading as Lacey Taylor, hurt but resilient, faces new challenges and shows her true grit. Another absorbing, fast-paced family drama from Mary Bradford.'

Denyse Woods, author of the critically-acclaimed, Overnight to Innsbruck and the best-selling, The Catalpa Tree and others is celebrating the publication of her sixth new novel, Of Sea and Sand, out this month in America and Ireland in April.

Double Joy

I have for months and I mean months been trying to get my newsletter off the ground. I attended two professional social media courses, but no luck. Every time I went to send my newsletter, Mail Chimp, told me no. I had issues to resolve. I contacted them but the issue never got resolved. I really wanted to have it up before my book came out on March 7th this year.
So after a lot of heartbreak and frustration all on my part, I was about to give up and give in.

Then I met, Emma.

She is a busy woman with family and work to attend to but she also gives time to anyone who needs help. Emma saw no problem in giving me some of her precious time to help me. She is the person who got me up and running with my newsletter and I am so very grateful to her.
Another lady, Lisa offered her assistance too when she heard of my dilemma. Honestly folks, aren't true friends amazing. I am so very blessed in life.
I met Emma through the Inspiration Project, I attended in Wexford in January this year. Over a chat she offered to help and help she did. Lisa, I got to know through another friend and again, she offered to check out my newsletter problem.

If you are blessed to have friends like, Emma and Lisa, then you are very lucky in this life indeed.

Falling in Love again

💗
Last week I received a mock-up of the cover for my sequel that is due out this year. The book, Don't Call Me Mum, continues on with Lacey Taylor as the main character from My Husband's Sin.

Having a book of mine published was a dream for me and when I saw the cover for my debut novel, I was so excited and happy. I thought nothing will top this, but I've been proved incorrect. 💖
Seeing the new cover, I got goosebumps and chills, the thrill of the first was there, the excitement and the love.

Writing a book is not easy, there are so many ups and downs during the journey from start to finish. So many questions that plague the author, am I mad? Will I ever see the end of this? Why did I start it? Of course, self-doubt is in all jobs. 💝

I cannot wait to share with you this gorgeous cover, for me the designer has got it spot on, Elle, is amazing and thank you to my publishers, Tirgearr for employing the best there is. 💕

Yes, I've fallen in love all over again with all there is to bringing a book to fruition. So much so, I've plotted the next in the series and the outline is waiting for me to get cracking on it. This will finish up the trilogy of what is the Taylor family saga. 💞

Launch Day for Susan Clayton-Goldner

Tell us about your book, Susan?
A River of Silence is about a hearing-impaired man, Caleb Bryce, who is falsely accused and imprisoned for the murder of a 19-month old child. This is the 3rd book in my Detective Radhauser series. Because of pressure from both the small community of Ashland and his boss, Captain Murphy, Radhauser makes the arrest, but remains convinced Caleb Bryce is innocent. With the help of a young public defender, who wants to prove herself to her father, a world-renown criminal defense attorney,  they set out to find the real killer and free Bryce.
The novel deals with issues of abandonment and the effects it has on the child even after he reaches adulthood. It also deals with alcoholism and its aftermath which can cling to the lives it affected for decades. Mental illness and disabilities is also a theme. And the book shows us that sometimes a person who is mentally challenged sees life in a more beautiful way than those of us who are “normal.”
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Mysterious, heart-wrenching and human.
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
I have just completed the edits and handed off a stand-alone novel to Tirgearr Publishing. It is entitled The Good Shepherd and is the story of a priest who falls in love with one of his parishioners and she ends up being murdered. I suspect it will release sometime in the summer of 2018.
I’m also working on the 4th book in the Detective Winston Radhauser series. It is entitled, A River of Shame and it is about the murders of two high school students in what appears to be hate crimes.

And what about Susan herself?
I was born in New Castle, Delaware and grew up with four brothers along the banks of the Delaware River. I've been writing poems and short stories since I could hold a pencil and was so in love with writing that I became a creative writing major in college.
Prior to an early retirement which enabled me to write full time, I worked as the Director of Corporate Relations for University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. It was there I met my husband, Andreas.
Through the writing process, I've learned that I must be obsessed with the reinvention of self, of finding a way back to something lost, and the process of forgiveness and redemption. These are the recurrent themes in my work.
Andy and I, now share a quiet life in Grants Pass, Oregon, with my growing list of fictional characters, and more books than one person could count.
When I'm not writing, I enjoy making quilts and stained-glass windows. I think it's a lot like writing--- telling stories with fabric and glass.

To find out more about Susan's other books in the series and read her author page, check out the folowing link

I wish, Susan great success with A River of Silence and thank her for being my guest.

Remember, Resolutions Are A Business

A new year begins, a clean slate, a new chapter, all the usual clichés and as you look about you, the shelves are full of magazines telling us what to do. Radio and television have shows dedicated to getting you off the couch and get moving, and yes, I see nothing whatsoever wrong with being told exercise is good for us.
BUT, but why are you doing it? A lot of what we do is because of outside influences.
Do you stop to think these new resolutions you will carry out with great fervour for a month or two are actually suited to you?
An example, you pay for a gym, buy new gear and after a few weeks, the novelty wears off (the weather is too bad to go out). Dieting? 50 different ways with lettuce is not very appetising, is it? Pressure makes us act in ways that if we stop to think about what we are doing, we might act differently. Why not go for a walk each day? Cheaper and you are still getting your exercise.
What I'm trying to say is, look in to yourself. See what is important to your life. Is there a change needed in it? If there is, approach it with an open mind.
What you read and see around you are companies that need to make a profit. New Year resolutions are a business for them.
So tread with caution, make small changes, ones that can be achieved. Nowhere is it said or written, that resolutions must be made in January, you can start anytime. If you do go for making a change in January to better your life, then wait until February to make the next change. By then the first one will be part of your daily routine and will not be a challenge to continue as you introduce the next.
This can be applied to all aspects of life, even your writing. You like to enter short story competitions? It can be costly, so set a budget for the year, even search for free ones online. Can't write each day but would love to? Why not make it 15 minutes a day? We can all squeeze in 15 minutes but not maybe two hours. Consider less television viewing and write instead, maybe two or three evenings a week. You still get your fix of TV but you also get your writing mojo up and active.
Whatever you decide, I wish you a happy and healthy 2018 and remember don't rush in, think about you and not what the advertisements are telling us we need.
Lecture over for now 😍
